Pneumococcal disease is an infection caused by the bacteria, Streptococcus pneumoniae (the pneumococcus). The pneumococcus commonly lives in the back of the nose without causing symptoms, but may sometimes spread to the lungs, brain, and other organs causing serious diseases such as pneumonia, meningitis or septicaemia (invasive pneumococcal disease).
Work was carried out to validate a mathematical model to predict the impact of switching from the existing from the existing 3+0 pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) schedule to a 1+1 schedule on (1) pneumococcal carriage and diseases and (2) cost-effectiveness in Fiji over 10 years.
Under the Project, staff at the CWM Hospital in Suva and the Nausori Health Centre recruited participants whilst the study focused on the use of existing data for data analysis.
