Pneumococcal disease is an infection caused by the bacteria, Streptococcus pneumoniae (the pneumococcus). The Murdoch Children’s Research Institute’s Centre of Research Excellence (CRE) led efforts to combat pneumococcal disease in Fiji.

The MRCI Centre for Research Excellence worked closely with the CWM Hospital in Suva and the Nausori Health Centre to carry out surveillance and use existing data to monitor the impact of vaccines and predict the impact of switching to a new vaccine schedule.
