Climate Resilience

We are also working with communities to bolster food security through more reliable farming technologies and climate-smart agriculture techniques; securing biodiversity with better forest management practices; and integrating climate change adaptation into national and local level planning and budgeting.

This includes supporting farmers to experiment with resilient crop varieties, improving soil health, and adopting nature-based solutions that strengthen long-term food systems. Alongside this, we place strong value on learning from, preserving, and sharing traditional Indigenous knowledge, ensuring proven cultural practices continue to guide how communities sustain their food sources, maintain their land, and protect their environment.

Through this combined approach, we are building stronger, more resilient food systems that can withstand environmental pressures and future climate impacts.

Environmental Protection

Live & Learn is addressing these problems across the Asia-Pacific region in a number of ways, particularly through our Kiwa EMPOWER Project in Fiji, Solomon Islands and Tuvalu, which supports communities to strengthen their resilience to the impacts of climate change through nature-based solutions.

This involves restoring ecosystems, protecting habitats, and managing natural resources in ways that enhance biodiversity while also reducing vulnerability to extreme weather events.

Through this project, we also work closely with local governments, civil society groups, and community leaders to support climate-informed planning, improve early preparedness, and increase local capacity to manage environmental risks.

By integrating conservation approaches with community-driven action, Live & Learn is ensuring that climate adaptation is not only effective, but locally led, culturally relevant, and sustainable for the future.

Water, Sanitation and Hygiene

Water, sanitation and hygiene is essential for eradicating extreme poverty and recovering from disasters. Live & Learn combines locally contextualised water and sanitation system designs with a rights-based approach so that marginalised communities and individuals are able to use their own skills and resources to provide safe water.

We implement projects that improve access to safe sanitation, promote positive hygiene behaviour change, protect the environment and help people recover and remain safe from disasters, including COVID-19 and during natural disasters.

Disaster Risk Reduction

Live & Learn Fiji works in areas affected by natural disasters such as cyclones, earthquakes, droughts and floods. These vulnerabilities are compounded by factors such as climate change, poorly planned development, environmental and ecosystem degradation, and unsustainable use of natural resources.

Live & Learn considers a Disaster Risk Management approach to building resilience. It is essential in eradicating poverty and protecting communities from the impacts of climatic conditions and environmental degradation.

Building disaster resilience is crucial to eradicating poverty and protecting communities from the impacts of climate and environmental breakdown. Live & Learn works with communities and governments to assess vulnerability and risk, integrate risk reduction into policy and budgeting, safeguard livelihoods and mobilise communities.

Throughout our disaster risk reduction activities, we ensure that our approach is inclusive and that it empowers women, men, youths, persons with disabilities and minority  & marginalised groups.

Equality & Inclusion

Empowering women, men, youths, persons with disabilities and minority  & marginalised groups to participate fully in all aspects of life is essential to building stronger communities and improving the quality of life for all. Live & Learn recognises the inherent value of each person and aims to promote equality between all groups in society, in every aspect of life – social, environmental, economic and good governance.

Our focus is on strengthening the voices and agency of traditionally marginalised groups, promoting them as leaders and decision makers and enabling their wholistic development. From valuing and embracing the importance of Indigenous Knowledge, pratice and rights, implementing and advocating for gender and socially inclusive programs and seeking to involve and include diverse groups in all our work.

Live & Learn aims to support all people to have the conditions they need to be resilient.

Food Resilience

One of the biggest challenges being faced by people across Asia and the Pacific is food insecurity. While communities have historically been able to maintain food security, a reduction in arable land, import dependence, geographic remoteness and increasing urbanisation, among other factors, now threaten this. People across the region are increasingly vulnerable to malnutrition and global economic and supply chain fluctuations.

Live & Learn is working to address this issue across a number of programs such as the Kiwa EMPOWER project. We are working with communities to bolster food resilience through more reliable and climate-smart agriculture techniques, emphasising the importance of traditional knowledge & practices regarding food security, protecting the biodiversity and ecosystems that assist agriculture and livelihoods.

Live & Learn Fiji is working towards a future where communities have access to reliable and resilient sources of healthy food.
