Kiwa EMPOWER stands for Engaging mobilisation for positive outcome in water, ecosystem, and resilience
Mission, Vision and Aim of Project:
The Kiwa EMPOWER project helps 24 communities in Fiji, Tuvalu, and the Solomon Islands adapt to climate change by restoring natural ecosystems, improving access to food and clean water, and supporting sustainable livelihoods. The project works closely with local leaders and community members, combining traditional knowledge with inclusive, participatory planning to ensure that everyone – especially women, youth, and people with disabilities – is involved in shaping solutions that meet their needs.
The three main objectives of this project are to:
- Encourage the implementation of NbS through community initiatives that tangibly improve ecosystem health, functionality, and resilience, while strengthening livelihoods, food and water security in the context of climate change. The success of the project relies on strong partnerships with ministries and government agencies at all levels. These partnerships help ensure that project interventions are aligned with national priorities, supported by relevant policies and regulations, and integrated into existing frameworks. The involvement of local and national authorities also contributes to the sustainability of the project beyond its implementation period.
- Strengthen the capacities of practitioners and community members for a better understanding of NbS and their ability to design, support, and implement related initiatives. This includes the integration of traditional knowledge, as well as the principles of gender equity, disability and social inclusion (GEDSI).
- Improve regional communication and collaboration by raising stakeholder awareness and facilitating knowledge sharing through the creation of platforms for exchange and learning on NbS.
